The seventh annual Team DC Night Out at the Nationals drew more than 3,400 LGBT fans out for a night of baseball and camaraderie, capped off by a bottom-of-the-ninth comeback victory by the Nationals over the Mariners. But the night kicked off in gay style, with the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington singing the national anthem; Amanda Simpson, the first openly transgender presidential employee, presenting the lineup to the umpire; Daniel Hernandez, the gay intern who helped save the life of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), throwing out the first pitch; and Washington Post opinion writer Jonathan Capehart opening the game with "Let's play ball!"
