In this 21 minute vignette from a longer work-in-progress Vineyard Voices -- American Stories, Dorothy Brickman, the first girl of the Jewish faith born on Martha's Vineyard, describes the early days of the Jewish community on the Vineyard. She talks eloquently of the struggle to maintain Jewish identity and traditions while embracing American culture. She speaks with pride of her family establishing the successful Brickman's department store, the founding of the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center and winning respect in an insular Island community. The film is truly an American story, a testament to human survival and will, and the endurance of family and faith.
