Francis W. Hoeber talks to Loraine Ballard Morrill about his book, Against Time: Letters from Nazi Germany, 1938-1939. Americans are schizophrenic about immigrants, sometimes welcoming and sometimes xenophobic and exclusionary. Johannes Hoeber and Elfriede Hoeber encountered both of these American impulses as they sought to excape the Nazis and become Americans in 1938-1939. Their experiences 75 years ago parallel the experiences of refugees from the Middle East today.
