Russia's “New Way of War”: Not so new, and not just war

Russia is accused of coordinating a “hybrid war” in Ukraine and in Syria Putin has used military force outside the borders of the former Soviet Union for the first time since the end of the Cold War.

On May 31, 2016, the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) arranged a seminar on the military strategy and goals of Russia. How can the use of military force in Ukraine and Syria be understood? What are Russia’s military strengths and weaknesses? What implications does Russia's military strategy have?

Speakers:
Mark Galeotti is currently a visiting fellow at ECFR and Professor of Global Affairs at New York University. From August he will be the principal director of the Mayak Intelligence consultancy in Prague and a senior researcher at the Czech Institute of International Relations. He has published widely, with 14 authored and edited books. His most recent, Spetsnaz: Russia’s special forces, came out in 2015. Alexander Golts is currently a researcher at Uppsala Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies. He is deputy editor-in-chief of the website ej.ru and has previously been deputy editor-in-chief of the magazine Yezhenedelnyi Zhurnal, military editor for the newsmagazine Itogi, and a member of the editorial board of Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star).
