I was asked a very direct question two weeks ago: what is the single most important thing that keeps people and companies from transforming the way they work? The one, single thing. After being taken aback for a few minutes and trying to narrow it down to one answer, it suddenly became very clear:

Fear. Fear is what keeps us from taking that first step out of our comfort zones, in order to allow said transformation to take place. Fear acts as a fastener, holding us in our old thought-patterns and habits. We make excuses to keep things the way they are, because the thought of a new, unknown way (even if it might be a better way) causes us to feel unsure. To feel afraid.
But it’s not the mere fact that we experience fear, that prevents transformation. It’s our attitude towards fear and how we choose to react to this fear which determines whether and what we learn from it. If we always stay within our comfort zones, in order to avoid the unknown situations which cause us to feel fear, then we can never expect to transform ourselves. The same principle applies to transforming businesses.

We always put part of ourselves into our work. This is inevitable. If we hope to be able to transform our business and continue to be able to do so, we have to start with ourselves.

This was the topic of my keynote at this year’s Google CEE Agency Summit in Kiev, Ukraine. It was an absolute honor to be able to travel to this beautiful city for this occasion and to speak in front of such a heartfelt audience.

Spoiler: we were all hugging by the end...
