Cebu City -- The heavy downpour that drenched the Sinulog revelers and contingents could not squelch the energy and spirit of the Lanao del Norte contingent as it grabs its third successive win in as many years of participation in the prestigious Sinulog Festival.

With an estimated 3.5 million spectators, the biggest the festival has ever attracted, the Lanao del Norte group showed poise and brisk execution of their routines to bag one of the most coveted awards in the Festival.

Going against 49 contingents including veteran powerhouses like Tangub's Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe, Tribu Himag-Ulaw of Placer, Masbate, and Tribu Buyoganon of Abuyog, Leyte, the Lanao Norte dancers wowed the crowds that lined the city streets of Cebu despite being neophytes in the competition.

"We are very proud of our dancers. To me they are champions. They really held their own and represented our province well", Gov. Khalid Dimaporo expressed.

This year's street dancing finish is an improvement from its third place ranking last year.

Showcasing the colorful Nangkaan Festival of the town of Maigo, the contingent is a mixed of high school and college students from the MSU-Maigo School of Arts and Trade (MSAT).

The Maigo dancers are the winners in last year's Showdown of Municipal Festivals during the 51st Araw ng Lanao del Norte held every month of July.

"Our participation is the fulfillment of our promise to last year's winning group in the Showdown of Festivals that whoever will win in the showdown will represent the province during the Sinulog", Dimaporo explained.

Last January 14, Ms. Lanao del Norte who represented the province in the Search for Festival Queen was also declared as Ms. Bioderm Bloom and Ms. Smart during the pageant night held at the Cebu City Sports Center.

"Our mission in the Sinulog is to promote Lanao del Norte as a safe and peaceful province. I believe we have done that again this year", Provincial Tourism Officer Minda Regis said.

Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe who now holds the record for the most wins in Sinulog Festival after grabbing their ninth trophy this year also won the top prize in the Street Dancing category. Lumad Basakanon of Cebu City got the third spot.

The town of Kapatagan representing Lanao del Norte and joining the float category for the first-time also won second place.

On February, the province of Lanao del Norte will host the highly-anticipated 2011 Palarong Pampook, otherwise known as Northern Mindanao Regional Athletic Association (NMRAA) Meet.

The province also just recently hosted the first-ever international motocross competition in the country at its state of the art Mindanao Civic Center Sports Complex. VNL/PIO-LDN
