The Kaidan Suite recreates the ancient Japanese ritual of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai—the Gathering of 100 Ghostly Tales—in which ghost stories were told by diminishing candlelight culminating in pitch black.
The multidisciplinary production of The Kaidan Suite draws from Japanese traditions in music and theatre (including Koto tunings, Shakuhachi flute stylings, elements of Kabuki Theatre) and melds them with contemporary Western approaches (modal jazz, new classical, free improvisation, site-specific installation, and interactive lighting).
Composed and directed by Billy Fox. Performed by the Kitsune Ensemble. Theatrical direction by Tomi Tsunoda and Andrew Scoville. Produced by Robert DeMarco and Jorge Rivera. Filmed by Rick Sarmiento.
