This video spotlights a college service learning program aimed at alleviating poverty in rural areas throughout China. Since 2006, Tsinghua University in Beijing has teamed with select North American universities to partially subsidize Chinese and American college students who teach English and other subjects to Chinese students with limited resources and opportunities. In the film, amidst video and photographs shot on location, college students from Tsinghua University, Wayne State University in Detroit, and other institutions discuss their observations and experiences teaching as a team and living at their respective rural sites. Special emphasis is placed on the transformational learning that takes place among the volunteer Chinese and American college students. Dean Robert Thomas, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wayne State University and an ardent supporter of the program since its inception, provides an introduction.
