Groups of Kurdish people wishing to enter Syria through a border crossing in Turkey's Suruç district were turned back by police officers and security forces Sunday. The border had been temporarily closed by Turkish police, who say the measure was necessary to deter Kurds from going to join the conflict in Syria. Some Kurds reportedly said they only wanted to cross the border to deliver humanitarian aid.
Security forces were observed using water cannon and tear gas to protect the border.
