ICANN New gTLD Question: Can I change how I use my dot brand?

There are a fair number of companies out there who are looking to not get left behind. They suspect that there may be some benefits in the future but they don't know exactly what they are.

For those ICANN TLDs you have to do a full application because you are going to go through exactly the same evaluation process, testing and so forth in order to get this fully delegated. You also going to maintain a few registrations on the Internet on an ongoing basis and pay ICANN's ongoing fees. Which I think are $25,000 a year and $0.25 per unit

You just never know when this window is going to open again. It may not open for another 5 years or even 10 years. Nobody knows when the next window is going to be. Any thought at all that leads you to believe that you may need one of these new ICANN TLD's even defensively; you should at least apply and get in there.

My understanding is that you do need to demonstrate that you are going to use this and give examples of this. Then I think you have a 2 year period to make it active.

People could even register for 10 domain names. You can not just park the TLD.

One big conversation with clients is that it's a large amount of money to buy it and park it. I believe ICANN has instituted some very good protocols to be able to insure that someone that isn't really Nike won't end up with .NIKE.

This decision process is going to be the hardest on the communities. If you are the "apple growers" and you are applying for the dot APPLE tld then you must provide proof that this is actually who you are.

Thank you to the Columbia Business School and all the speakers for this video about ICANN TLDs.
