The Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair is held each October. It boasts exhibitors from the United States, Canada and Europe offering thousands of beautiful, rare and antiquarian books and ephemera.
At the 2014 fair we saw a showcase of early twentieth century illustrator, Charles Livingston Bulls’ work offered for sale by Lowry-James Rare Prints and Books. Bull illustrated over 7000 cover and interior images in nearly 150 books and articles during his lifetime, as well as many posters like these three for the Michigan Tuberculosis Association.
The fair is billed as the Pacific Northwest’s premier book event – and we would agree. There was a buzz in the air as bibliophiles of all ages searched though shelves and shelves of collectible books. From rare pieces of ephemera, to modern first editions and collectible manuscripts there truly is something for every collector.
We couldn’t help but be drawn towards Phillip J. Pirages Rare Books with a brilliant display of illuminated leaves and manuscripts, some dating back to the 13th century. Also on display were books printed before 1501, early English books, fine and historic bindings and modern private press books.
Luckily admission is valid for both days of the fair. And with so many bookshops displaying their best books – it’s easy to get lost in the rows of exhibitor booths for days.
White Fox Rare Books & Antiques caught our attention with their whimsical display of hand-colored illustrated materials. From caricature to literature – their offerings were diverse and equally beautiful across all fields.
The Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair is a great gathering of some of the best rare book dealers in the world, and a great place for any book collector – or admirer to visit.
You will see book reviews, bookshops, top 10s, rare and beautiful books, tips for book collectors, author profiles and much more. We love books and are glad you do too. AbeBooks is an online marketplace for books. Millions of new, used, rare, and out-of-print books are offered for sale through the AbeBooks websites from thousands of booksellers around the world.
