Family owns marina ("M") about a mile from my house. Right before you reach the marina, there's a huge hill and if you don't pay attention it could be very dangerous.

One summer when I was 11 or 12 I wanted to ride my bike to the marina by myself. I told my mom and she said it was fine and that I had to call my dad to let him know to watch for me. I called him but my cousin Rob ("R") answered and said my dad wasn't there but that he'd watch for me.

I was all ready to go and mom stopped me. She said I needed my helmet. I told her I didn't because I'm awesome at biking. She said if I don't wear my helmet I'm not going. I reluctantly looked for any helmet - I found a purple one.

So I got on my bike, pretended to be careful as I rode away from my mom. As soon as she was out of sight I morphed into "biker mode". I felt like I was racing a motorcycle because I was going so fast! In reality, I wasn't going very fast. But man did I think I was cool. I continued looking around and daydreaming almost the whole way.

And then I got there - the hill. I was ready for it. I peddled as fast as I could and everything was going perfectly - until a mouse ran out in front of me. I tried to swerve around it but I lost control and eventually flipped off of my bike.

I stood up and realized I was alive, but blood was everywhere - on my arms, my legs, even on my face. I got back on my bike to ride the rest of the way but my front tire was bent so it made the rest of the ride wobbly.

I saw Rob waiting at our 'meeting place'. I could see his face as I approached him, he knew I fell. He told me to call my mom and let her know I was alive and then turned and mumbled to himself about how she was going to "bitch at him" because I got hurt.

I called my mom and told her I was fine and then I started to tell her that Rob was worried she was going to be angry. I wasn't sure how to spell the word he used, so I asked her how to spell "itch". She said i-t-c-h. I then told her that Rob said she was going to B-i-t-c-h at him. My mom started laughing so hard.

In hindsight, I should've been paying attention and gone slower down that hill instead of racing down.

My mom still cracks up and tells that story to everyone...
