The lyrics are exactly as I wrote them in 1979. I was inspired by an episode of _The Gong Show_ in which Every. Single. Act. Was somebody singing "The Way We Were." (One of the contestants even sang it in Pig Latin.)

Like in 32K* RAM
Think twice 'bout upgrading your system
From the way it were.

Scattered program steps
from the place where you left off,
Hoping mem'ries will remember
The way it were.

Can it be computers were so simple then?
Or have ads rewritten ev'ry ... line? (Get it? HAR!)
If we had the chance to build them all again
Tell me, could we?
Should we?

Seem so intricate, and yet
What seems too long to remember
They simply choose to forget!
So it's the short steps
They will remember,
If ever they remember
The way it were.

The way it ... were.

*) Some time after I first wrote this song, I upgraded this line to 48K RAM.
