From KETC, LIVING ST. LOUIS Producer Jim Kirchherr visits Hannibal, Missouri for a look at the annual Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher selection process. Each year, one boy and one girl—no older than 13—are selected to be the official ambassadors for Hannibal and to play the roles of Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher from the books and writings of Hannibal native Mark Twain. The two will don traditional costumes and mingle with tourists of all ages while explaining the history of both Twain and the city of Hannibal. The competition to become the official Tom and Becky involves work ethic, knowledge (of both Twain and Hannibal) and—most of all—personality.
