St. Elizabeth Medical Center, in collaboration with the University of Toronto, is participating in a unique patient safety initiative called "Bordering on Zero". The program empowers our front line staff by letting them identify a goal and work together on planning and implementing their own strategies to reach the target.

Our Medical Surgical Unit on 3A was chosen to lead this effort and they chose to decrease the rate of Hospital Acquired Infections. One strategy the staff decided to focus on was improving our Hand Hygiene compliance rate. Nurses came together and decided to produce a music video to encourage handwashing and soon our hallways were taken over by three germ-fighting country girls known as the Flu Fighters.

Participation became contagious and soon staff from administration to dietary, respiratory and more began making cameo appearances to help emphasize that we should all "Wash Yo Hands".

Our goal is to see our Hand Hygiene compliance rates increase hospital wide. Rates are monitored throughout the Medical Center by our Infection Prevention Department and results are conveyed back to nurses of each unit on a monthly basis. This video was a huge success in bringing our staff together while encouraging proper hand hygiene and helping reduce Hospital Acquired Infections. We are very proud of our staff for the dedication and hard work they put into this project.

We encourage you to view the video and share it with friends and colleagues to help reduce the spread of germs and the flu through proper handwashing.
