WOUNDED KNEE by Keith Beasley

Out on the Indian reservation
Arapaho, Navajo, Cherokee and Cheyenne
A million tears and more have fallen
The white man cometh and he stole the land
Out on the plains across the prairie
Sitting Bull, Kicking Bird, Crazy Horse and Red Cloud too
The white man speaks in broken promises
The iron horses come on rolling through

CHORUS:

So bury my heart at Wounded Knee
And set my spirit free, across the sky
And though we walk on trails of tears
No one sees and no one hears, as the red men cry
And when another white man lies
Another indian just dies my friend
And don't pretend you cannot see
Bury my heart at Wounded Knee

The ghosts of dead men in the mountains
Kwahadi Comanche, Apache and Blackfoot Sioux
The "Bluecoats" guns that roar like thunder
The white man slaughtered all the buffalo
And in the campfire's dying embers
Little Crow, Buffalo, Geronimo and Roman Nose
The graves of braves across the canyons
The rivers red from indian blood that flows

CHORUS
So bury my heart at Wounded Knee
And set my spirit free, across the sky
And though we walk on trails of tears
No one sees and no one hears, as the red men cry
And when another white man lies
Another indian just dies my friend
And don't pretend you cannot see
Bury my heart at Wounded Knee

I've see the dead men riding ponies
Oglala, Kiowa, Iroquois and Minniconjou
I watched them dancing in the moonlight
I saw them slowly fading out of view
I watched them driven from their country
Yellow Bear, Running Bear, running scared and Eagle Heart
I watched the white man burning teepees
I watched them tearing all their world apart

CHORUS
So bury my heart at Wounded Knee
And set my spirit free, across the sky
And though we walk on trails of tears
No one sees and no one hears, as the red men cry
And when another white man lies
Another indian just dies again
And don't pretend you cannot see
Bury my heart at Wounded Knee

And don't pretend you cannot see
Bury my heart at Wounded Knee
