Carlos Cántaro, 27, has multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, a life-threatening disease that requires two or more years of grueling treatment. The Peruvian Ministry of Health and Partners In Health in Peru provide treatment and care for the disease. Cántaro, who lives in the shantytowns outside Lima, Peru, decided to take up running again after participating in group therapy with Socios En Salud, Partners In Health's sister organization in Peru. He completed a 10K race in 55 minutes in October, 2013. "I will finish treatment and continue working for my family," said Cántaro, who is married and has a 3-year-old son. "God willing, I'll always have my passion for sports."
