Rudolf Speich, University Hospital Zurich (UniversitätsSpital Zürich, USZ) was awarded an honorary title "Doctor Honoris Causa" Dr. h.c. of the Medical University Varna in the 24th official ceremony taking place on June 11, 2014 in the Auditorium "Vladimir Ivanov" at the University Hospital "St. Marina", Varna.
The recipient of the honorary title Pr Speich is Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Zurich (UZH), Lead Clinician at the Department of Internal Medicine, and Reader in Pulmonary Hypertension at the Department of Pulmonology, Universitätsspital Zürich (USZ).
Pr Speich is a renowned European specialist in the field of pulmonary diseases and pulmonary hypertension. He has conducted extensive research in lung transplantation, complications in immunocompromised patients, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary infections, bronchoalveolar lavage and orphan diseases like pulmonary hypertension and hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. He was an expert at the 2nd and 3rd WHO World Symposium on Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH), and is currently a member of the Cologne Consensus Conference organized by the PH working groups of the German Society of Cardiology (DGK) and the German Society of Respiratory Medicine (DGP). Pr Speich was the first to describe the impact of HIV infection on PAH. He takes part in large international trials and registries like the Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension Registry run by the International CTEPH Association, the Comparative, Prospective Registry of Newly Initiated Therapies for Pulmonary Hypertension (COMPERA), and the Pulmonary Hypertension Registry of the Swiss Society of Pulmonary Hypertension. At the moment, his focus concentrates on aspects regarding quality of life in patients with pulmonary hypertension.
During the event Pr Speich gave an academic lecture entitled "The language of breathlessness".
