(UPDATE at the bottom of this description) Consumer Reports put out a "Hit Piece" on tankless water heaters a couple years ago. I found it to be full of holes, missing and misleading information and found it shameful that they intentionally seem to leave out important details to help a reader draw a reasonable conclusion to the article choosing instead to slant the data given in favor of the writers opinion. After many questions about this article it was time to set the record straight.
UPDATE! A company called CAMCO now has both metal and plastic drain pans for tankless water heaters. These are required by code and almost ALL major brands of tankless call for them for when a tankless water heater is installed in an area where a leak can cause damage. You don't need them in a garage or unfinished basement but in an attic, interior space, etc you SHOULD have one! They will get old and they can leak. Good news is there is no big tank to bust and flood the place and a pan gives you all the protection you need!
