This video shows a custom VNC ("Virtual Network Computing") remote desktop client that can map a local or remote 2D desktop into arbitrary 3D applications running in any type of 3D display environment.
2D desktops are presented as 2D windows floating in 3D space, and can be controlled by any type of input device, including mice, keyboards, joysticks, 6-DOF desktop input devices, etc.
One practical application of a 2D desktop embedding is extracting data from scientific visualization applications by directly "beaming" measurements taken in a 3D application into a 2D spreadsheet, where they can be catalogued and annotated.
