For almost ten years, dedicated volunteers from Veterans For Peace have assembled at Santa Monica Pier very early every Sunday morning to pay tribute to those brave Americans who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Just before dusk on Sunday, all of the caskets and crosses are removed. However, every Memorial Day weekend the memorial is not taken down, but is left until dusk on Memorial Day. This video was taken on Memorial Day weekend, 2012.
Each white cross represents the loss of one American life. Each red cross represents the loss of ten American lives. Each casket represents the number of military who were killed during the previous week.
If the casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan were represented, the entire beach would be filled.
