U.Va. alumna Val Ackerman addresses the University of Virginia's Class of 2012 at Valedictory Exercises. She salutes them for their accomplishments, "validating" their graduation. Students produced a clever video encouraging classmates to come to today's ceremony to get "validated."
Ackerman remains an active and supportive alum, following her active time as a student when in Charlottesville. She played basketball for Virginia and was selected an All-American twice. She went on to become an attorney and served as the founding president of the WNBA. She also held a leadership position with USA Basketball, working with the men's and women's teams that won gold medals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Ackerman speaks about leadership, appreciating that U.Va. graduates will play leadership roles from the start of their careers. Writing a book about leadership remains on her "bucket list."
