For most folks, the last time they square danced was in their middle school gym class or summer camp. Yet today there's a whole host of grown ups lining up to get their call on, spurred by a movement to foster tradition, community, and old time music.

What began as a niche scene in the Pacific Northwest in the 90s has since spun out to the entire west coast, eventually becoming Dare to be Square West (an offshoot of the original Dare to be Square weekend at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. The festival moved from Portland to Seattle (home of the original Subversive Square Dance Society) before landing in Los Angeles in 2013; you can check out our exclusive video from last year's dance above. This November, the event moves on to the Bay Area, and eventually to Vancouver in 2015.

Outside of the three day Dare to be Square weekend, there are plenty of socials held up and down the coast throughout the year.
