Nurse practitioners are asking the legislature for the ability to 'Baker Act' mental patients, or involuntarily hold them for 72 hours until they are seen by a psychiatrist. Currently, medical doctors, police and some social workers can sign the order to help prevent someone hurt themselves or others. Nurses say, however, that patients will often tell them one thing, and then change their story once the police get involved.
