Press freedom and human rights groups are criticizing Britain for using a terrorism law to detain and seize equipment from the partner of journalist Glenn Greenwald, as well as forcing Greenwald's newspaper, The Guardian, to destroy hard drives containing the files of NSA leaker Edward Snowden. Jacob Appelbaum, a computer security researcher who has also been stopped numerous times at airports over his work with WikiLeaks, tells Democracy Now! that the British government's actions embody the current threat posed by the surveillance threat to democracy. "If everything is under surveillance, how is that you can have a democracy?" Appelbaum asks. "How is it that we will be able to protect our sources if there's no way to securely meet, no way to communicate about having a meeting, no way to actually communicate about basic facts. There's no such thing as on or off the record when, in fact, you don't control the record."
