Hi there, Im Roni Taylor and this is MMA 360. 2013 is nearly over and, boy have we had some great fights this year! In September we saw the UFC light heavyweight belt on the line when Jon Jones stepped into the octagon across from Alexander Gustafsson. It turns out that the best weapon to combat Jones' 84 ½ inch reach, came in the form of Gustafsson's quick footwork and brutal counter-striking. While Jon Jones may have retained his belt, he also got to take home a busted up face, an extra large fat lip and hopefully a big ol slice of humble pie. This fight was way closer than anyone had anticipated and honestly, I had Gustafsson winning three of the five rounds on my card. Somebody better tell Jon Jones that getting to keep that belt around his waist, was his early Christmas present. His stockings wont be getting anything but coal from here on in.
Back in July at UFC 162, the biggest upset in UFC history came at the hands of Chris Weidman as he dispatched the then pound for pound king, Anderson Silva. Nobody doubts Andersons incredible skills, but I for one was happy to see him get put on his butt after all of the in-cage antics he used to taunt his opponents. Youre not on "Dancing with the stars" Anderson, so leave the fancy moves in the locker-room when you rematch Weidman. You just might get your belt back...maybe.
One of my favorite fighters and long time Las Vegas resident, Vitor Belfort had two incredible high kick finishes this year, further cementing him as one of the greatest fighters of all time. Vitor made his UFC debut way back in 1997 and looks as good, if not better, 16 years later. Michael Bisping got dropped with a left high kick to his noggin in January and then Luke Rockhold fell victim to a spinning back-kick in May. Vitor seems to defy father time and in a sport dominated by 20-somethings, he now sits atop both the middle weight and light heavyweight divisions, knocking on the door of once again wearing UFC gold.
