Promoting yourself as a DJ.
I get these questions a lot: How can I let it be known that I'm a DJ? How can I get bookings? How can I make a name for myself?
There are a lot of things you can (or should) do and today I'll start with a couple of basic things that can help you to start promoting yourself.
- Make (and upload) mixes. You need to have material for people to hear. Use sites like Mixcloud and share through social media, but also make sure that you ask your friends for support. Let them share the mixes with their friends and through social media. This way you can be sure that you just expanded your audience and more people know you know.
- Network. Talk to people and let them know that you are a DJ. You never know who could be in a position to book you for their event. Also make sure that you have some copies of your mixes with you at all times! Burn a couple of CD's or get some 1Gb flash drives.
- Create your own platform. Organize small events where you can play and display your skills. Start very small and invite your friends and ask them to bring at least 1 friend. Now you have a place to practice in front of an audience and possibly create a fan base.
These are just a couple of things that you can do right now to promote yourself.
But first: MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE READY TO SHARE YOUR SKILLS WITH THE WORLD! IF YOUR SKILLS ARE NOT UP TO PAR YOU SHOULDN'T BE TRYING TO PROMOTE YOURSELF YET. Practice, practice, practice!
