Eight years have passed since Laura Bush declared that "because of our recent military gains, women are no longer imprisoned in their homes" in Afghanistan. For eight years, that claim has been a lie.

The truth is that American military escalation will not liberate the women of Afghanistan. Instead, the hardships of war take a disproportionate toll on women and their families. There are 1,000 displaced families in a Kabul refugee camp, and they're suffering for lack of food and blankets. A few weeks ago, you generously gave $6,000 to help and $9,000 more is needed to take care of all 1,000 families. Thats a donation of $15 per family to provide the relief necessary for their survival.

Here's what your money will buy:
* 5 kg (11 lb) ghee = $5.00
* 4 kg (8.8 lb) rice = $3.00
* 50 kg (110 lb) flour = $22.00
* A middle quality blanket = $10.00
* A middle quality tent carpet = $40.00

Main Points:
• The perception that the women of Afghanistan were only oppressed under the Taliban and were freed by the US military intervention is wrong.
• Violence against women has increased; including acid attracts.
• Infant motility rates haven't improve since the ouster of the Taliban.
• The mujahideen, the US-funded group that fought the Soviets in the 70's, was the most misogynistic rebel group at the time.
• The mujahideen were the predecessors of the Taliban; who adducted, killed, raped women as well as forced women into marriages.
• These same mujahideen are dominating the Afghani parliament now.
• President Karzai appointed a very conservative judicial that doesn't recognize the rights of women.
• Women are being inprisoned for running away from home, refusing to marriage a man their family picked for them, and even for getting raped.
• Because they live in a war zone, life is worse now for women.
• War widows get no support from the government.
