To reset our muscles back to comfort, we tap into a reset mechanism involving the alpha-gamma loop or alpha-gamma motor neurons.

This feedback loop is what we can affect towards restoring and lowering tension levels in our skeletal muscles.

When we move with awareness, the brain sends messages to contract certain muscles. As we consciously pay attention during a particular movement, we can hone in on our sense of adjustments taking place.

When we move unconsciously, we move as we normally do. These movements are learned programs... for better or worse.

The alpha motor neurons are what we tighten or contract to make the tension necessary to move our skeletal bones around while the gamma motor neurons give us the sense or quality of a movement. The nerve cells or neurons conduct impulses in the loop.

Our somatic nervous system is what we use when we move and sense our self. To alter how well we move happens in the alpha-gamma loop where we harness the brain's motor cortex to send impulses to the spinal cord and out to the muscles. Then we fine tune and self-adjust as necessary.

The natural process of what is called a pandiculation was identified back in 1680 to bring muscles to rest. Herman Boerhaave, the founder of modern day clinical medicine noted this taking place. Today, we have a system of somatics exercises which uses pandiculation as the heart of the process to change towards more positive & comfortable feelings in our muscles.

It is built into our very nature to change negative feelings into pleasurable ones. It's when we forgot or no longer remember to re-initiate this natural process, that things such as muscular stiffness, aches, discomfort, feelings of being bound-up, wound-up even to the point of stressed areas which no longer just let go... no longer do. We live with the discomforts we tolerate.

This exacting price changes when we reset the alpha-gamma loop by regaining cortical control with easy, gentle movements that anyone can do.
