The City of Palo Alto has been aggressively trying to downsize roads around town for many years now. For the most part, the residents have been vocal enough to keep the City from actually reducing lanes in the towns few arterials,
The City Council did agree to a trial of a lane reduction project on the Charleston/Arastradero Road, claiming that taking lanes away from vehicles would make the road more "safe" for bicyclists, while providing no historical accident data to bolster their claims.
This video shows, shot on a Saturday afternoon in July, shows how little traffic uses Arastradero on the weekends, including bicyclists.
