FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Squamish, BC (Jan 23, 2012) -- The Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada

(AVLIC) fully supports the actions taken across Canada on January 13, 2012, in lobbying for the establishment of Video Relay Services (VRS) for Deaf Canadians.

AVLIC applauds the efforts of the Deaf community, organizations, agencies, businesses and individuals who took part in the rallies, wrote letters of support, participated in the VRS Feasibility Study Report and who continue to do what they can to convince the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to establish and mandate this service for all Deaf Canadians.

"AVLIC encourages its 700+ membership to extend their full support behind this issue. Deaf Canadians have the right to full access to VRS and we support the organizations and agencies that are working tirelessly to persuade the CRTC to make this service sustainable and equitable to all Canadians" says Christie Reaume, AVLIC President.

AVLIC urges the CRTC to immediately implement this service as a fundamental right for Deaf Canadians to ensure equal access to and participation in society as citizens of Canada. This service needs to continue beyond just a feasibility study and needs to be implemented nationally. AVLIC corroborates with Deaf Canadians on this issue and insist the CRTC comply with the 5-point demands requested by the community.

For more information on VRS in Canada please contact a local Deaf association or the British Columbia VRS Committee. For information on visual language interpreting, Canadian standards, education, membership or certification, feel free to contact through www.avlic.ca.
