Communities across the Nation are experiencing climate change impacts, such as changes in average temperatures and precipitation regimes, more extreme weather events, and rising sea levels. Managing the risks and opportunities associated with today's climate variability as well as evolving climate change plays a role in the ability of federal agencies to meet their mission objectives. This session will provide a broad overview of climate science and what we are learning about how to create and communicate information about climate change to practitioners and decision makers. The concept of climate adaptation will be introduced and community-based strategies for responding to a changing climate through adaptation will be highlighted. Effective adaptation planning will allow HUD and its state and local partners to broaden their range of options with respect to planning for climate change
