Pwad: Tncross2.wad Author: Valis Date: 5th April 1994 Map: e2m1 Category: UV Maxdemo Executable: Doom.exe Time: 0:48
This is a very early combination deathmatch/single player level, dating from the time when there wasn't as clear a distinction between the two modes of play and some level authors would try and make their level suitable for both. I can't really see how it'd be any good for deathmatch though, and for single player's it's terrible. Ugly, poorly lit, with level geometry that's awkward to run around, it's really no fun at all. No thought or care is evident in the design. Why a cell pack when there's nothing to use it with? Why's that spectre at the start perched up on the ledge where it can't move? Nothing gels, nothing makes sense.
So you might think this is something that was thrown together in half an hour, but what's sadder is that this is actually version two of the level. The first version, called TNCROSS, no longer exists in the idgames archive but you can play it in the WADPAK1A compilation. It was basically just the square arena. So all the little adjoining secrets and squiggly side passages in this run were added later. Nothing has been revised - what the author had already put in, he left unchanged. Even the ridiculously easy to reach exit was left alone.
I wasn't enjoying this one, can you tell? It was frustrating to get a decent time here, though mainly because I wanted to avoid the lost souls and they were quite keen on blocking me. I think this is the fastest route - yes, there's a rocket launcher and rocket pack for the taking, but they take you too far out of the way for you to make up the time with more efficient kills. The berserk fist was fast enough for my purposes.
Edit: comments reminded me that I couldn't get 100% secrets here either. See TheGreenHerring's explanation.
