Toronto Police News Conference Re: Bruce McArthur Investigation Update | LiveStream | Wednesday, April, 11th, 2018, 1:30pm | Detective Sergeant Hank Idsinga, TPS Homicide

Alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur has been charged with First-Degree Murder in relation to the death of Abdulbasir Faizi.

At a news conference at police headquarters on April 11, Homicide Detective Sergeant Hank Idsinga said Faizi was one of three men whose disappearance was linked to Project Houston.

McArthur was arrested on January 18 and charged with six counts of First-Degree Murder in relation to the deaths of Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, Soroush Mahmaudi, Dean Lisowick, Majeed Kayhan and Skanda Navaratnam.

“One of the focuses of the investigation has been human remains found in planters at Mallory Crescent,” said Idsinga. “These remains are of individuals who have been dismembered. They are in various stages of decomposition and doctors from the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service have been doing some very difficult and time-consuming work attempting to reconstruct the remains and identify them.”

Idsinga said the remains of at least seven individuals have been located within the planters and those of Kinsman, Mahmaudi and Navaratnam have been identified.

“I can now add that pathologists have identified the remains of Esen and Faizi,” he said. “We also have evidence to believe that Listowell was killed in April of 2016.”

Homicide investigators are currently reviewing 15 cold cases from 1975 to 1997.

“This number is fluid and may increase or decrease,” said Idsinga. “As a result of tips and help from the public, we hope to begin searching some properties associated to Mr. McArthur with our canine unit. As of today, our list has grown from 30 properties to 75. We are targeting early May to commence these searches.”

On March 5, investigators released an enhanced photo of a deceased man who is believed to be a victim of McArthur.

“To date, over 500 tips have come in from various sources,” Idsinga said. “From these tips, over 70 potential identities of the unknown male in the photograph have been received. The majority of these potential identities have been eliminated, but we continue to work on 22 of them. Although we are cautiously optimistic about linking one of the remaining 22 to the unknown male in the photograph, I would encourage anyone with any further information or insight, whatsoever, to please pass that information on to us.”
