From within a broader investigation of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s relation to the poet Heinrich Heine, I will be focusing on Nietzsche’s break with the composer Richard Wagner, specifically in relation to Heine. Central here are Wagner’s debt to Heine and condemnation of Judaism as the “evil conscience of modern civilization.” A reconsideration of these fraught relations involves recent finely-grained readings of Wagner’s anti-semitism, Nietzsche’s (anti-)anti-semitism, and Heine’s Jewishness.

Currently, he is guest at the IWM.
