It was only the second time that Ioan "John" Vancea ever played Powerball. The Falls Church man bought a ticket at Sleepy Hollow Exxon, 6661 Arlington Boulevard in Falls Church. His ticket matched the first five numbers in the March 3 drawing to win $1 million.
The winning numbers were 29-30-45-47-49 and the Powerball number 35. He used Easy Pick and allowed the computer to randomly select the numbers on his ticket.
On March 8, he returned to the store to receive his million-dollar check from Virginia Lottery officials. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
This is the first Powerball ticket in Virginia to win $1 million since the game changed in January. Before then, this ticket would have won $200,000 for matching the first five numbers. Other changes in the game include an increase in the minimum jackpot to $40 million, improved chances of winning at every prize level and an increase in the ticket price to $2.
