My name is Dave Dulio and I'm the chairman of the Political Science Department at Oakland University and we're delighted to play host to a 2012 Republican presidential primary debate.

It's difficult for me to overstate the importance this event has for our campus and our students. It gives them what I believe is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see their government — see their democracy — in action.

They have a chance to participate in one of the most important events of the 2012 election cycle. It also gives them a chance to meet and interact with national and state leaders on campus.

As part of the debate experience, we've planned a number of educational opportunities for our students, which will give students an opportunity to engage in the issues that will be brought up during the debate — mainly the economy. And we will also have the opportunity after to debrief and discuss what happened and what it means for the race moving ahead.

The response to this opportunity on campus has been nothing less than spectacular. When we put out a call for student volunteers to help with many aspects of the debate, we had a tremendous response. All across campus we had students come out and say they want to be a part of this once in a lifetime experience. They will have life changing, career changing opportunities.

Some students will be able to follow journalists around as shadows, some will help with production, some students will even be able to participate as stand-ins for the candidates when they're rehearsing and setting up the set.

For someone like me who has a deep interest in politics, it's also a once in a lifetime opportunity. We're excited for what this is going to bring to our university and excited to be able to have the nation's eyes look on Oakland University.
