Thumbs Up Painting and Renovating

Part 1 Italian Ceramic Tile

Tile project requiring 5/8" plywood over 3/4" OSB sub-floor. Total thickness - 1.375"

Minimum thickness of underlay (plywood) + sub floor (OSB) must be greater than 1 1/4". DO NOT use non-galvanized screws as they may rust and cause underlay to raise. DO NOT* screw underlay into sub floor joist*. Use construction grade plywood as this will provide optimal adherence of ply to mortar to tile. DO NOT Stagger the plywood over the OSB and leave a minimum of 16 inches of material on either side of OSB joints. Leave 1/8 - 1/4" expansion gap around perimeter of the room. Leave 1/16 - 1/8" expansion gap for interior joints. Apply a latex caulking 1/4" inside the interior expansion joints. Let stand for 15 minutes. Reapply if there are any missing gaps. Scratch mortar bond over expansion joint let dry 45 minutes - 1 hour. Apply thin even coat of mortar bond over joint. Seam with fiber joint mesh. Begin tiling when seams have hardened.
