Nicole Fort was born with spina bifida, a neural tube defect caused by the failure of a fetus's spine to close properly during the first month of pregnancy. When she was born, the doctors told her mother, Trisha, that Nicole wouldn't live passed the age of 2. They told Trisha that Nicole would never walk, talk or do many of the things that most people take for granted. They were wrong.
Nicole is now 20 years old and living in Bushkill, Pennsylvania. While her life has certainly not been easy, she has persevered and is now thriving.
The last time Nicole walked was at the age of three. Since then, she's relied on a wheelchair to navigate through life. On May 17, 2006, thanks to the physical rehabilitation provided for her at Good Shepherd Physical Therapy-Stroudsburg, Nicole walked, with the help of a walker and braces, for the first time in 17 years.
