I’VE GOT DREAMS by Stephen A. Dantes

I feel like I’m walking a dreamland
Martin Luther
His words are like the constant echo of what I have
And you have
And we all have
Wishful thinking of those of us who want more than just the dreams of old men

I’m standing on a podium proudly pushing power packed punches
Pompous in my style
I am Martin with no dreams like the middle class
My clenched fist is a reminder of a painful past I try to put aside
I am the remnant of every great poet who came before me
My passion a poison to those with no dreams
I am walking contradiction
I have no legs to stand on

I done did do chore
Given more of youth in year’s baked pride
Like flipped patties torched to delight
Like light life lifted heavy burden of journey strapped
Like vests proof to bullet on chest weak to regret
I walk long stretch road dirt drawn drift dry dream
Dead in closet with each forward step back in dust track I track dust in back step forward

I’ve got memories I call dreams
I am ghetto child
I am poverty
I am genocide
I am holocaust survivor
I am Harriet Tubman
Underground Railroad
I am Desmond Tutu
I am Nelson Mandela in white Africa
I am Bob Marley in politically divisive Jamaica
I am Dalai Lama imprisoned in my own country

I am Mufasa, Maya Angelou, Nkrumah, Shaka Zulu, Mahatma Ghandi, Akbar, Malala, Anne Frank, Helen Keller, Nightingale, Sir William Arthur Lewis, Derek Walcott, Naipaul, Lincoln, Gorbachev, Rosa, Wangari
I am little boy walking bare feet in search of water whilst capitalism turns riches into wealth
And wealth into greed
I am dismembered survivor of suicide bomber
I am bowel of pirate ship filled with fear and malice
Dreams are like respiration to me
Inhale and exhale

Years of corruption
Slavery, inverse racism, racists, fascists
Malignant narcissists
I’ve got dreams
But I don’t remember
I remember then I don’t
Sleep evades me then it comes
I am like octopus
Keep your eyes open and you see the secrets of the world
The ills
The evils

I’ve got dreams but no money
And my soul is not worth hell
I am heaven bound
I dream of Jesus the saviour
The Christ
I dream of love
Peace
Harmony
World utopia

Then I open my eyes
To realize the real lies of prized nations
I’ve got dreams
Martin Luther
Barak Obama
Mother Theresa
I’ve got dreams
