Since Wi-Fi began in the early 1990’s it has become a large part of daily life whether at work, at home, at school or even whilst you are travelling, so people do not give it much thought anymore. It has been called one of the miracles of our modern age. It helps people to stay in touch, get information and news, even be entertained. This scale of convenience has never been available before. But this being said, more and more medical experts are becoming quite concerned with regards to the long-term health effects, that being exposed to electromagnetic fields, will have on us and further research should definitely be done on the long-term health implications which include electromagnetic hypersensitivity syndrome.

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome.

EMS (Electromagnetic hypersensitivity syndrome) has become an issue that effects people who are exposed to electromagnetic fields such as Wi-Fi, mobile phones & smart meters. Early studies have shown that this may be more of a problem than has previously been suspected. A study led by a team of researchers from the Environmental and Resource Studies Department at Trent University in Canada found that if a cordless phone base station, plugged in, was placed near a person’s head for 3 or 4 minutes it could affect the heart’s rhythms.

It appears that some people are more vulnerable to this than others and the Symptoms of EMS are divided into 2 categories: mild and severe.

Mild EMS Symptoms

Fortunately, most people affected by EMS report mild symptoms such as those listed below:

Light headedness
Dizziness
Skin irritation including sensations of itching and burning.
Spontaneous headaches that are not easily treated and are unexplained.
Nausea
Aching or painful muscles
Difficulty concentrating
More Serious Exposure problems

The problems in the list above are fairly minor but some medical professionals are concerned that more sensitive individuals experience more serious issues that can be worsened by EMS like the ones listed below:

Attention deficit disorder (ADD)
Hyperactivity
Migraines
Insomnia and other sleep disturbances
Parkinson’s disease
Irregular heartbeats
Certain forms of cancer

Limiting Exposure

Because Wi-Fi is everywhere it cannot be avoided, but there are things you can do to help limit the exposure.

Use landline phones wherever possible
Keep the base stations for cordless phones as far away from sitting or sleeping areas as possible as these are mini cell phone transmitters.
Carry your mobile phone in your bag/purse so that it is away from your body and not in a pocket
Turn Wi-Fi off when not in use.
Turn computers and cell phones off when not in use especially if they are in a bedroom.
Avoid having electrical devises in the bedroom e.g. electric alarm clocks, electric blankets etc. as the EMF exposure from these can cause or exacerbate insomnia.
Remove or refuse smart meters.
Try to avoid your children using mobile phones as they are still developing and are more vulnerable to EMFs

When you have limited your exposure as much as possible make sure that you have EMF protection with and around you.

The long-term effects of Wi-Fi and other devices that emit EMFs are not known for certain. And with today’s modern technological society it is almost impossible to avoid exposure all together. The changes to your use of these devices as shown above can help. In the meantime, hopefully more research will be done on this issue to determine what potential problems can be caused by long-term exposure.
