This follows the previous 2 released in December 2017 and March 2019. This episode will cover Phantasy Star 3 inside and out, discuss the game’s high and low points, dissect its legacy, and relive the memories made from it.
It’s easy to dismiss Phantasy Star 3 due to some of the differences the game has from the rest of the series but I hope a detailed, balanced look at this game will change the minds of people who have brushed it off in the past.
Following the success of Phantasy Star 1 and 2, Sega had set a high standard for the franchise, and fans of the series were expecting part 3. At the end of 1989 the Japanese game market was not quite yet at its peak, but were putting out massive hits, one after another, have now become a long list of games that are held up as timeless classics. The move to 16-bit hardware was in full swing, as Sega in Japan, retired the Mark 3, while in America, the Genesis was now available. The RPG genre was also coming into its own, with dozens of games out and more on the way. With Multiple Dragon Quests, Final Fantasies and Phantasy Stars, RPGs were here to stay. Sega had etched out its own place among the Role Playing games available by forgoing the medieval sword and sorcery style game for something more high tech - a space opera. The plan for 1990 was to continue on with the Sci-fi saga, yet unexpected consequences altered the course of the final game.
