Jan Link (Research Planning and Accountability Department Everett Middle School, San Francisco): Never thought I'd be a teacher. I lived on a sail boat for 5 years, sailed around the world, I lived in many, many countries but I kept getting feedback that I'm just a natural teacher. So I started working with severely emotionally disturbed children in a non public school. So then from there I ended up in the public school system and I've been there for 25 years as a teacher and I've had various roles in the district. Now I sit in the research planning and accountability department and I look at many of the programs that we have in the district. We try to see what effect do these programs have on student achievement.

Question: How did you first hear about the Quiet Time program?

Jan Link: Well the first time I heard about it I was out at Everett and I saw a video tape of students being interviewed who were also from the two middle schools that had been involved in Quiet Time. I was absolutely impressed. I said, "if we have a program that is so profoundly affecting students from students who simply couldn't sleep at all at night who could actually get a nights rest with some kind of intervention called "Quiet Time" I wanted to know what is going on.
