This is a passion project of mine that I've been working on since June. Shinsekai Yori is one of my favorite series, and for my next project I really wanted to edit a story-based drama video that could capture some of the magic and atmosphere of the anime.
Shinsekai Yori's story is rich and complex, and as a result it was quite challenging to tell a story within the limits of an AMV. In the end, I tried to focus on two aspects: the tragedy of repeated loss, and the tragedy of Saki's society--an idyllic, yet fragile and fearful community built in the forgotten ruins of a dying world.
The story is told non-linearly and with my best attempt at some ham-fisted symbolism, and my scene choice certainly confused a lot of my peers when I entered it into Anime Weekend Atlanta's Professional contest this year. I won't deny that my narrative is incoherent in places, but this is my best effort right now!
If you're confused, just remember that the one feeling I wanted to evoke was the pang of loneliness. Shinsekai Yori's world is truly lonely--an epilogue to a melancholy future where human powers developed beyond the human heart's ability to hold back its own inner darkness.
For those of you who haven't seen the show yet--my apologies for the scattered spoilers! That said, there is so much more to this show that I was unable to convey, so I highly recommend you go check it out.
