Avec les Sarabandes, Satie élabore un langage harmonique et contrapuntique qui va faire date dans l'histoire de la musique et influencer partiellement Debussy, Ravel et toute une partie de l'école française du XXe siècle.
Les biographes de Satie pensent que le compositeur a été partiellement influencé par les accords de neuvième non résolus du prélude de l'opéra-comique "Le Roi malgré lui", du compositeur français Emmanuel Chabrier, auquel il avait assisté en 1887 et dont la musique l'avait bouleversé.
Au cours d'une autre représentation de cet opéra, un incendie se déclara et fit de nombreuses victimes. Satie faillit être lynché par la foule car il se souciait peu des blessés et répétait avec insistance : « C'est une véritable tragédie pour Chabrier, si bien parti pour un grand succès... »

With his Sarabandes, Satie develop an harmonic and contrapuntal language which will be a landmark in the history of music and shall partially influence Debussy, Ravel, and a part of the twentieth century French school.
Satie's biographers believe that the composer was partially influenced by the unresolved ninth chords of the prelude to the comic opera "Le Roi malgré lui" (The reluctant king) by the French composer Emmanuel Chabrier, which Satie attended in 1887 and whose music had positively shattered.
During another performance of this opera, a fire broke out and caused many casualties. Satie was nearly lynched by the mob because he cared little for the wounded and repeated insistently: "This is a tragedy for Chabrier, off to a good start for a big hit ..."
