Public Panel
February 18, 2019

"In anticipation of Freedom to Read Week, I am interested in reclaiming the term "freedom of speech" from the alt right and, as leftists, tackling urgent questions around freedom of speech/hate speech/creative censorship in the arts, such as: how do we fight the increasingly censorious environment on the left and in the arts in the name of protecting equity-seeking groups? In our current climate, when a group of people are offended, it seems that an apology is not enough. Is there a redemption narrative? If so, what does it look like? Currently there is deplatforming, shunning, and mobbing. Who gets to decide what is harmful/hateful speech? Does offense equal harm? If so, what are the greater restrictions on speech and freedom of expression in the arts? These are just some of the questions that will be tackled by this superstar panel: Samir Gandesha, Sky Gilbert, Morgane Oger, Omari Newton, Micheal Vonn. I, Carmen Aguirre, will be moderating."
