Plastic pollution is a problem - but the solution starts with recycling everything and anything we can, including plastic bags. We scoped out the largest plastic bag recycling facility in the world to see how it's done. Check out our tour of the Hilex Poly plant in North Vernon, Indiana. And recycle those bags!

What did you do with that "fresh bag of warm pallets"? Did you trash it? ;)

I live in Wisconsin, where recently, plastic bags can be recylced. It makes me feel SO much better when I don't have to throw them away. I've always wondered how the process worked, and it doesn't look seriously complicated, which makes me hope that other states will soon follow suit.

Thanks so much for sharing this video. I searched for videos on this process after I was told by my city recycle program (in Houston, TX) that they do not accept plastic bags because they get caught in the machines. I knew there had to be a way to recycle them, and while I'm happy Houston is finally making a stronger recycling effort, I hope they incorporate plastic bag recycling very soon!

So... why are people still using plastic shopping bags?

Any amount of money says she took that complimentary bag of plastic pellets and threw them in the garbage.

It's a nice idea to recycle bags, but I can't help but feel that it's counterproductive. Just looking at the factory shows you how much energy and time has to go into making a recycled product. The far more effective (and green) solution would be to never use plastic bags, and just use reusable tote bags instead, thereby eliminating plastic all together.
