Manel Esteller is head of the epigenetic program in IDIBELL, the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute in Barcelona. He has recently been awarded the Rey Jaime I Prize for his research. OVER THE HORIZON OF EPIGENETICS Two identical twins have exactly the same genes. This makes it physically are apparently identical, but each one, are going to react differently to environmental stimuli and will suffer various illnesses throughout his life, in which they cease to be identical twins as the years pass. The reason is epigenetics, a set of markers that cause a gene to be activated, and others are blocked according to the stimulus received. According to epigenetics, physical features or a serious illness, such as cancer, would appear only in one of the brothers.
