April 21, 2010: Dr. Ian Glenn, University of Cape Town - "What's new about the new South Africa? Media, identity and social change in a developing democracy."

Manuel Castells, University Professor and Wallis Annenberg Chair in Communication Technology and Society, welcomes Dr. Ian Glenn, director of the Centre of Film and Media Studies at the University of Cape Town (South Africa). His topic: "What's new about the new South Africa? Media, identity and social change in a developing democracy." From Dr. Glenn: "The media play a central role, not fully understood or acknowledged, in forming and shaping the new South African democracy and identities within it." This talk examines some of the central tensions and paradoxes that make South Africa such an interesting case study and test case for understanding contemporary media, paying particular attention to the rich data available in South Africa for media research. The talk will touch on issues such as media freedom, the role of new technologies, the media's role in nation-building, and the ways in which the ANC Presidents have shaped political communication in the media.
