Dr Demis Hassabis, Founder & CEO of DeepMind, is one of the three recipients of the Academy's 2016 Silver Medal - for his pioneering work in artificial intelligence following a number of breakthroughs for DeepMind, which was founded in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014. He was the lead AI programmer on a number of successful computer games in the 1990s and early 2000s before completing a PhD in cognitive neuroscience.
He made headlines in 2016 with AlphaGo, the first computer program ever to beat the world’s number one player of the fiendishly complex game of Go, in a contest in Seoul that was watched online by 280 million viewers. He has said he is on a mission to 'solve intelligence, and then use that to solve everything else'.
Dr Roger Highfield of the Science Museum chairs the Academy’s Autumn Lecture.
